Maybe those FAs were playing dumb? You would think that they are trained and know where and how things are on a plane they're working on.
If they were they certainly were doing a good job of it.
What I think happened is that it was up in the expensive seats and they worked economy. Given how rarely it gets used I can see them forgetting about it.
