Based on the above, I bought a used Nexus 4. Hit my price point and should work in Singapore/Malaysia/Germany which I am about to embark for.
I'll be 2 days in Japan and 1 in China. I turned on my Verizon international coverage (whoo, 25mb) and $2/min calls. Getting a SIM for those short stops won't be logical and the 25mb allows me enough emergency data to get what/where I need.
For Singapore and Malaysia I will be buying local SIMS. Looks like the M1 is the easiest to separate data and voice in Singapore and since I am there first I can pick up a Celcom card in SG for Malaysia as well.
I REALLY appreciate all the help. The last few trips I've made I had to try like hell to find Wifi to make Skype calls. I downloaded Rebtel as well to hopefully simplify this all.
