Be aware that there is a difference between cabin luggage sizing in the USA and Europe. In general terms, the 22" in Europe includes wheels and handles etc, whereas in the US it may not. You may then get stuck if you have to put it through the sizer.
A totally appropriate question. Mostly for intercontinental routes, as often as possible in Biz. For shorter, briefer routes within Europe (especially UK, I know they can be tough) I can use an old, compliant bag I already have.
As for airlines, I live in Madrid so for travel to the US, Iberia, Delta, US Air or United. For travel to the East I try to use Virgin or British (in that order) but also use Lufthansa and Swiss. In my dream world it is Singapore Airlines, but that has happened only rarely.
