what is an appropriate overweight bag fee

I'm flying AA this morning with 2 giant checked bags. One I knew was about 70 pounds so I fully expected to pay overweight bag fees. I paid $60 which is the standard fee to Check 2 bags. While I obviously would prefer not to pay bag fees at all, I'm not totally opposed to it. I suspect that's not a popular belief on this forum. I big bag came out to 72 pounds and I was charged $100 for an overweight bag on top of the base $35 charge. I think the fee is a little steep and unreasonable. I'm curious to know what all of you think is the appropriate fee to charge and why.
