On a 3 day business trip to Sydney several years ago, my bag with all of my business clothing didn't arrive with me. Upon checking at the baggage desk, they couldn't tell me where it was, so I took a taxi to my hotel in the CBD and waited for a promised timely call. About 8 hours later, I received a call from UA baggage and was told that my bag had routed through AKL and was on its way back to the US, showing SYR as the destination!
