The airline said that luggage is checked through from SFO.
I fear this is not enough time?
Welcome to FT!
If your luggage is checked thru you should be fine. There is a shuttle bus between terminals or it's maybe 10-15 minute walk. Clearing security is always the unknown.

Why on earth is the MCT at LAX 70 minutes domestic-domestic?
The terminals can be quite long. If you take the worst case, arrive at the end of one and depart from the end of another, plus the time waiting for and riding the shuttle bus (because they can't assume you could walk it) and then clearing security -- I can see that taking an hour. Us savvy travelers could do it quicker, I've no doubt but I'm sure these MCT are designed for infrequent travelers.
