OK, true. So then - any recent experiences interlining by UA across separate tickets on a non-alliance partner?

Unfortunately not helpful. You don't mention if this was on two separate tickets...and BR and UA are alliance partners so I would expect that to work seamlessly. You also don't mention if this was a BR ticket or a UA ticket.
"Experiences" - yes. A bag got stuck for 3 days between united and KLM. Supposedly it ultimately KLMs fault, but UA transferred the bag late.
