If there is no C class available at the moment, the best you can do on AA is to waitlist and hope that the upgrades clear. No one here will ( I suspect ) be able to give you any guarantee that they will clear.

If booking AA is contingent upon the upgrade , then I would suggest the safer bet is to take the cheaper flight
