OP here. Two weeks after writing to DL, I heard back. They confirmed that the other guy got my upgrade and humbly apologized. Said they would look into better staff training, especially the correct coding of non-complimentary upgrades.

Sadly they didn't think the error was worth two RT First class tkts to Tahiti - only 10K miles.
