Flying to US westcoast in Comfort -

Hi,
I am from Tel Aviv and planning to fly to Portland on May 21 and returning May 26/27. I was hoping to fly Comfort to LAX or IAH but it seems all the fares are around $2700-2900. thats too expensive for me.
I can try to fly to IAH and return from YYZ or JFK and it goes down for about 1800 but I prefer to do both legs to/from LAX or IAH.
Any recommendations? Should i buy an economy ticket and try to get an upgrade for cash? what are my chances these days? Can i buy an upgrade without being a FF member? How soon can i secure it? Can I do it at TLVor only IST?
