Am I unique with my Avios collection / spending dilemmas?

The vast majority of my Avios are from Tesco, BA Amex (Black, plus companion vouchers) and Lloyds Duo card.

I also maybe do one LH paid J fare and have always in the past done the WTP and UUA to CW.

Over the course of a year I collect about 200,000 miles (on our household account) and have one Companion voucher to spend.

On my last 3 flights (LAS to LHR and LHR to DXB to LHR) I did not get the opportunity to upgrade, despite both flights being booked over 3 months out, and checked at least twice a week (daily once close) to reward availability in CW.

So now I have nearly 400k Avios and 2 companion vouchers and I can't spend them. Well I could if I choose to fly somewhere I don't want to go, when I don't want to be there, but that's it.

So, I'm Avios rich, I'm paying subs on a credit card to earn at a faster rate (plus voucher), I choose to spend my Tesco clubcard vouchers on Avios, which in turn, I cannot spend.

I can spend 40k Avios on a trip in WT to NYC, but the taxes means the total I pay is about the same as a sale fare, on which I could earn avios?!

Am I the only one who is thinking that Avios have a similar value to the Zimbabwean Dollar, or am I missing something?

I love flying CW, but can't afford it unless the business is paying. In the past, have enjoyed it via careful planning with miles/Avios and being loyal to one airline. Am I wrong?
