Well the VS miles thing I'm extrapolating from the sticky thread on this forum about the difficulties booking on partner airlines and that other thread about what to do with VS miles and people suggesting that they weren't worth as much as other airlines.
ah. so in terms of saving $/getting more points what can I do? Any tips for travelling within the EU? I'll probably be funding some short trips across Europe to triathlon competitions once I've settled in Edinburgh.
A lot of the North Americans on Flyertalk like to complain about the fuel surcharges and UK departure taxes (which are close to unavoidable with VS Flying Club as they only fly in and out of the UK), but that shouldn't really impact on your thinking because your situation requires UK travel. VS is a decent enough programme, but don't forget that you don't necessarily have to post your miles to Flying Club, you can fly VS but credit your miles in a partner programme.
Have a think about Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. (if interested you can search for it on my blog) You can earn miles flying with Emirates, Air France and British Airways, but a return in economy to HKG on CX is only 60k miles. (or 85k in business...)
Other tips... do your food shopping at Tesco and collect clubcard points... those convert to Avios or Flying Club miles... Every once in awhile Raffles or myself in our blogs will point out really good opportunities to generate cheap miles thanks to Tesco.
Also... look at flying HKG to somewhere in continental Europe and booking a separate ticket to EDI. You might find it's a lot cheaper, and since you have to connect somewhere anyhow (i.e. LHR) you might as well do it in Continental Europe.
