If it's the Global GSM model, it's a great choice for the countries you mentioned; the US GSM version will be a little limiting for the UMTS bands.
The CDMA/EVDO version isn't very useful outside the US (and maybe Canada?) even for voice/text.
Not sure how you tell in person which version it is.
