That is not strange, it was there from day one of the original 747 from 1969.

The fuslage of the plane narrows/tapers towards the back and thus not enough width for a full row. It is same for all planes but due to the size of the 747 it is more noticed.

The AC or HK pair would be ideal for your requirements; as long as your don't mind being at the back of the plane.
