This unit from Bestek may be an option if all you need is American-style plugs, with decent spacing between each outlet; I just got mine the other day, but haven't tried it on 220 yet. It looks sturdier than most of the universal outlet models at least.

Obviously if you plan to plug non-North American equipment in you'll want one that has universal outlets, but for US/Canada-based travelers this may be a good option, coupled with either a plug adapter or appropriate IEC C7 cords.
