In the days when your 4 year extension to your license was on a separate piece of paper, I landed in Souix Falls, SD without the proof of extension. At first I was handed back my license and credit card and told that it was expired and I couldn't rent a car. When I asked (very politely) what options I had available they provided a car and driver to take me to the local DMV office. A quick check of my identity and an eye exam and I had a temporary SD license and shortly keys and a car.
