Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a new return from wherever you are? Once you come back to tidy up, surely you need to get back to your new home afterwards?
So, ticket A (with family) LHR-XXX-LHR (unused return)
Ticket B (just you) XXX-LHR-XXX.

Or am I missing something?
