The machine readable zone on the bottom of the passport biodata page -- the thing with the >>>> kind of symbols and your name and other stuff -- is what is used usually for the swiping/scanning. Sometimes it doesn't work/get picked up properly.

The MRZ scan and the chip scan can fail and the passport can still be valid for admission into the US.
