Can only echo the others' opinion - travel insurance will be far more generous; if it is a serious condition diagnosed after the ticket was booked, I can't think of a single travel insurance policy that would not kick in. By contrast, the airline will offer anything between kind words to (at the very best) allowing a change of date as a gesture of good will.
