I don't have a chip in my passport but some other thing that when swiped it picks up the info (sorry I don't know the term - or maybe it is a chip?). This stopped working a few years ago. So, when ever I leave or enter the country, I mention this and whomever is processing me knows they have to type in my passport number. It takes a few more minutes but I've never had a problem.
