Once I told them which routes to stick to by using mostly the Broadway, east and west side bike baths things were much more enjoyable for them. If you stay for some time after your work and get a bit familiar biking can be a fun way to get around.
Totally agree that one needs to be a confident biking to do this successfully, but I also have found that New Yorkers are adjusting fairly well to having swarms of bikers on the streets. For the right person, it's hard to think of a better way to see the city.
