Not true for me in two separate experiences at DFW this past week. In one case, our TPA-DFW segment was running late, so general boarding for our connecting flight to RNO was well underway when we arrived at the gate. We walked up to the priority boarding lanes and the gate agent immediately motioned us forward. As others have said, gate agents don't always follow the rules, so YMMV.
