Say I'm on a tight connection and I arrive at my connecting gate when general boarding is in progress. Is it OK to skip the general boarding line?

If not, then what's the purpose of having a separate priority lane? (Though I've definitely seen some gate agents rope off that lane after they finish priority boarding.)
