Between 25 and 29 inch wheelers?
I'm trying to replace a Tumi which is 27 x 20.5 x 10.5 on the outside.
Went to Costco, Macys and a luggage store and it appears the only choices are 25 or 29 inch, most of them spinners. There was one line that had 24 and 28 inch but they were similar to the 25 and 29 inch models in size and weight.
The 25-inch doesn't appear large enough, probably because I was used to the Tumi, which I often used to pack to the gills, making good use of the fact that it could expand (doesn't have the expandable zippers like a lot of large luggage these days).
I do overpack and I don't use various methods to maximize space. Instead, I took advantage of the give in the Tumi's nylon and the large exterior pockets it had (useful for instance for stuffing clothes which needed to be laundered when I returned from trips).
The 29-inch suitcases would obviously work but there are two concerns about those:
1. The telescoping handle isn't long enough to hang my carryon, which has my laptop and other electronics.
I only check in one bag and when I'm on the move, I put the carryon on top of the Tumi and wheel both around, wearing a backpack for my DSLR.
That way, I don't have to worry about using the airport luggage cart. Also, I will often take public transportation and that means some walking to reach destinations.
So the ability to tote the check bag as well as the carry-on in "docked" mode is important. Only the 25-inch bags have long enough telescoping handles for my carryon to hang onto.
2. In some of the cars I've rented in Europe, my Tumi just barely fit into the trunk or under the hatchback cover. I don't go for the cheapest rental but I don't go for the bigger or luxury cars either.
So something with the Tumi's exterior dimensions would be ideal.
Has anyone shopped something along these lines recently?
