I've been to Beijing many times and stayed at almost all the IHG and Hyatt hotels and honestly, they are all very similar. The difference in hospitality of Holiday Inn Express versus Park Hyatt may be heaven and Earth in the US, but in the China they're all amazing. I am looking to stay at a non-chain hotel. It does not have to be fancy (preferably <$200 / night after taxes and fees), and it does not have to be a western brand. No location preference. Any recommendations?
Off the top of my head:
-Opposite House
-Parkview Green (the hotel itself has a different name, and is part of a small chain)
-Hotel G
-Emperor Hotel (really nice roof top overlooking the Forbidden City, though no elevators)
-Beijing Hotel (not nearly as nice as its prices would suggest, but there is a lot of history surrounding it)
You might also want to research some of the 四合院 style properties around Gulou, but be warned that the pollution (dust, in particular) is a huge drawback.
