Rather than an integral detachable pack the 55 has, I picked the 40 and also bought an Osprey Axis (18L). I like this combo. The 40 is small enough for a carry-on with the Axis as the 2nd bag. On the few occasions where I wanted it, the 2 compression straps on the front of the 40 secured the Axis to the front of the pack just fine. I looped a 3/4"” wide, 18” long cam lock webbing cam strap thru the 2 top handles to be sure and that worked fine.
Thanks AATrout. The Daylight doesn't zip on like the 55's day pack; it has 4 D-rings that slip through attachment points on the main pack. Depending on the pack, these could either be slits in the compression flaps, D-rings hidden under the compression flaps, or loops.

I was curious how well strapping in a day pack would work as well. Thank you for sharing your experience.
