Amex 241 Open Jaw - Different Zones?

Hi,

I'm looking for a better understanding re. using the in-bound leg of a 241 award to a completely different destination as the out-bound.

I have a 241 expiring soon and intend to use the outbound to AUH next month however as there is no availability on the in-bound (& the departure time isn't ideal either), I am considering flying home by different means: EY.

As I understand, no changes can be made to the return leg once the out-bound has been flown, however that leg could be up to a year later and can be for 'any' destination regardless of zone / country as long as the distance between the two destinations is shorter than one of the two flights?

So in the case of AUH, what destinations out with the M.East could I possibly book an open jaw return from? I'm guessing it might be just be a couple of Asian destinations (No N.America?), bearing in mind I'll have to find a feasible one way in-bound option.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks
