That's not the POUG method - clicking the 'upgrade with money' link when there's no promotional offer displayed will only result in the above message or a fare difference upgrade price.

Promotional upgrades are advertised in the scrolling banner at the top of MMB or OLCI, or when you click on the 'upgrade' link for each flight it will clearly show in red as a promotional offer.

Multi-city routes like JFK to BLR do not typically show POUGs, so you'd be best off asking at the airport and going the AUP route as you suggest
