For non-elites, they stop showing seats for assignment once only a certain percentage is left, it used to be 30% (note elites still can assign seats). It is extremely rare for AA to IDB anyone, even if the flight is oversold they are very good at getting volunteers. You should keep checking back to see if seats become available for assignment, especially as you get within the upgrade windows.
