Yes you pay more for the extra leg room seats and exit rows but there is no extra charge for sitting in a window seat that is not extra leg room.
If you were in the middle section down the back then that is all the seats that are left - you weren't put there because you were on an award ticket. People who have paid cash sit in those seats too.
On a 747 that usually does the EWR-LHR run there are only 24 extra leg room seats and 12 exit row seats out of a cabin that seats 261 passengers.
There is no difference in service or where you can sit just because you are on an award ticket or have paid a fully refundable / changeable cash economy fare. Most of the crew won't even know you are on an award ticket anyway. I've never been on a flight where it was "rubbed in" that I was in economy
