Since US-sized carry-on bags tend to be larger than the ones found in Europe, there may be chance that they'll gate check your carry-on bag if it surpasses the allowed dimensions.
For those who think more effectively in thumbwidth and stone weight measurements:
55cm = 22in
40cm = 16in
23cm = 10in
8kg = 18 lb.
The last dimension (23cm/10in) and the weight (8kg/18lb) is a killer for many larger carry-ons.
