Also, absolutely essential to read every phrase in every section of the fare rules on BULK tickets. Some of these are completely non-changeable and have $0 value if not flown exactly as booked. Can be a great deal if it works for you.
Or the people who spend the exact same amount as a ticket on UA.com, but wind up getting suckered by PQ$ exclusions not clearly spelled out in the T&Cs. Not sure I would term it "histrionics"...instead of people genuinely surprised and upset at the "Flyer UN-friendly" United airlines.

If UA won't sell the ticket, there is a problem on one or more of the opaque vendors you are using. I would triple check that you have a proper e-ticket number (not a PNR, but e-ticket) and that there is a specific fare basis associated with it. If you can't pull this up using the e-ticket # on united.com, you have a problem.
Why are you bringing up opaque vendors? If OP is using Travelocity and the flight is identified as a United flight...how is this opaque?
