Agree, I too remain confused on the strict definition of the term. Stay tuned, I guess.
To add one more detail (didn't want to create War&Peace sized original post); after being told by YYZ service desk "protected means nothing if you don't have a seat" (how pithy an observation!) and by YYZ concierge that YHZ concierge had dropped the ball, when I called back to YHZ concierge to express my disappointment with their service & communications, I was told by Dot, the YHZ concierge, on the point of being protected vice having a seat that YYZ concierge was being "too technical".
Only someone who doesn't fly home routinely on a Friday night with plans to fly out again Sunday night would think the notion of having a for-sure seat on a Friday night flight is 'too technical'.
