DFW may be getting 6th terminal

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport CEO Sean Donohue is talking about a quickly approaching timetable to get started on a sixth terminal at the airport, the so-called Terminal F.

Donohue, speaking at the DFW at 40 conference at the University of Texas at Arlington, made several points that go together:

– He thinks Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, which is handling 60 million passengers a year, will handle 70 million passengers a year by the end of this decade – or about six years from now.

– If D/FW traffic goes to 70 million passengers a year, the airport will need a sixth terminal to handle the passenger loads.

– It takes four to five years to design, approve, build and open a terminal of that size.

– That indicates a decision time of 2015 or 2016 to get going, Donohue said.

Terminal F would be south of Terminal D on the west side of the airport, across International Parkway from Terminal E. The site is now occupied by airport parking.

Terminal D, which handles international flights, is the most recent terminal to be added at the airport. It opened in July 2005.

The other four terminals – A, C and E on the east side and B on the west side – date from the airport’s opening in January 1974.
