The 50 MB roaming in the fine print is domestic roaming, I believe. I subscribe to the mobile broadband 500 MB, now 1 GB, plan and have used it outside the country in excess of 50MB in international roaming. This didn't incur any additional charges.
I've read T-Mobile usually runs hard credit pulls for new subscribers. For me, that is a good deterrent from canceling and starting repeatedly. Just think of the monthly charge as a "keep it active" fee or average the cost per use over trips instead of month.
