At least in my case I was asked also in the lounge by the lounge agent.
She seemed pretty excited to grill me about this information.
As for verification I have no idea what they would be looking for or in fact where this information even goes.
It seems like a very good way to annoy customers for no reason- at least in my case it came off very very badly particularly in the lounge.
