When you priced out the two, were you comparing AA coded/operated flight to BA coded/operated flight or AA coded/BA operated flight? There is sometimes a substantial difference so make sure you select the "AA/OW" option when searching (if you didn't already) or just search ba.com directly.

Let me also throw out a few other options which are somewhere in between:

BA out (better bed) and AA back; if combinable then the difference in price should be half.

Spend $550 and 25k miles for the outbound to upgrade the AA flight to F, which will be much better than AA or BA in J.

If, and only if, you were considering taking IB and connecting at MAD anyways, consider separate LON-MAD and MAD-ORD tickets to avoid the massive APD taxes one incurs flying a premium cabin long-haul ex-UK.

Drawback of BA is (ime) that the security checkpoint in T5 is busier than that in T3

benefits of BA are a fully flat bed, better IFE and a nicer arrivals lounge

for LHR-ORD, I would def take the BA service over AA
If the times are right, any reason not to clear security at T3 and then hop on the shuttle if there's really that much difference?
