I have been pro-actively protected on a couple occasions this year. In each case an additional segment just showed up on the app. Then it went away after I completed my flights. Thankfully I have not actually needed any of the new flights, although in one case I did re-route myself through another city instead of risking the missed connection (turns out I would have made my original connection but only because the original connecting flight was also delayed).
