May I make the suggestion if they are all about the same price, get yourself on to QF108 JFK-LAX-SYD and QF107 SYD-LAX-JFK (with either a SYD-MEL vv or sidestep onto QF94/93 at LAX which is a direct flight to MEL). The JFK-LAX vv sector will be far nicer than anything which a US based airline flies, since QF treat that as an international sector, and thus you are appropriately fed / given drinks / IFE / free checked bags etc...

The other thing, if you haven't already done so, sign up for QF's mail, often they will come out with cheaper sale fares.

Finally, next year February won't start having any decent sales until later this year (September / October would be the earliest I'd expect to see such things). February might be high season, but it's certainly not peek, so you may be able to find a bargain or two between now and then.
