Be sure to check the policies of different FF programs when tickets must be changed. In particular, most charge fees for nonelites (and some charge fees for booking tickets close to the travel dates) and DL award tickets (including for flights on partner airlines) must be changed/cancelled more than 72 hours before scheduled departure or ALL of the miles will be lost. I'm stressing this because I know that foreign adoptions from other countries can involve uncertainty about when the child will be available and also when documents including a passport for travel can be obtained.

However, it looks to me like SkyTeam doesn't serve ADD at all, so you would need to consider buying a cheap ticket between ADD and some airport served by SkyTeam, perhaps DXB. If you do this, which will mean separate tickets, be sure to allow lots and lots of time for the connection in case you have delayed or cancelled flights. Call DL several times to ask whether Kenya flies to ADD but it isn't on the route map on this month's in flight magazine. These tickets would need to be booked with DL by phone.

In an ideal world, try to do the better routing and more convenient schedule with your new child rather than on the earlier trip.
