JohnK is correct, I have the required Status Credits already, but not the final 2 legs or single return on a Qantas flight, which is a secondary part of the criteria required to attain the Gold status. I ended up in the same position last year with 720 points and never bothered going for Gold, but this year I am thinking to be so close again without doing it seems pointless.
The suggestion from Dave as to looking into AA was one I had considered, but I pretty much never travel in the US.
I have the next month to do the flight, so I guess I'll try it this year just to see if I get sufficient value out of it. With SC's on partner airlines being cut, I may not find myself in this position again for a while.
Do you soft land into Silver after a year in Gold if you don't requalify, or is it straight back to bronze?
