In general PG doesn't open space close in. Their own FFP rules mandate awards be booked online and no closer than 5 days prior to departure so there's not much wiggle room. JAL bookings on PG seem to be 4 days prior so that potentially better.

This is common. BKK-USM-BKK, especially the return, is brutal for finding award availability.
From May 20-July 15 PG has their yearly 50% off awards promo but the JAL taxes are lower than what PG collects from their own members (and PG awards are point-point) leaving interesting prospects depending upon routing.
I'm currently sitting on substantial PG points and can run dummy award bookings for any route on their site. Please post in this thread and then notify me if anyone would like me to check on award availability. I'd prefer not to receive PMs asking for flights but don't mind a message sent to let me know there's something here to address.
