Buying miles from the airline is legitimate but expensive, and generally not worthwhile. Buying/selling miles from a participant in an FF program may not be illegal (=against the law), but it is a violation of the program's rules and regulations. If the violation is detected, the penalties administrated by the airline can be quite severe. Not recommended.
