I normally book at a few hours notice and you take what you get! I have done a few "walk ups" in the last few years where I was due to fly somewhere and got a telephone call to divert whilst en route to the airport and just walked up to the counter and bought a single in whatever they had, fortunately it was business or economy - so I took business.
