As with everything else, if you use your commonsense you're unlikely to get into trouble, whether gay or straight. Jeddah was trickier since having any female in your car, other than your wife or close family member, could invite questioning from the Mutawa’ah, the religious police, but it didn't stop me. Women cannot drive in Saudi, but can in Iran. I had access to a beach villa along the Red Sea and I often took BA cabin crew off there by way of an escape from near imprisonment in their Jeddah hotel. But I'm glad I didn't spend long in Riyadh......
