Trying to rearrange an inflexible ticket

Hi, I'm generally a lurking reader on this forum but I'm hoping that someone with much more experience can help me figure this out.

I currently have 2 club tickets that I booked in the Christmas sale to Cancun late July returning 31st. I got a call today from some American friends asking me to extend my trip so that they can meet up with us. They offered to pay our change fees for us to be able to do this. Of course my tickets are I bucket and so I cant change them.

I called the silver line so see if I had missed something and was told my only options are to keep the existing flights or cancel and receive £180 per ticket back. So my thoughts are to travel out on the existing tickets and to "miss" my return and book a one way for a week later. The one way prices look horrendous, I've tried playing with connections via the USA (JFK, ATL and MIA) and I played with another return ticket. Would there be any kind of problems with missing two returns? Is there another option I've missed or a routing that could be more cost effective than $4800 each that the one way is giving me?

Many thanks in advance for your help
