Given a LHR layover greater than 12 hours with the layover at LHR being an overnight at LHR, the likelihood of having to claim the bags at LHR is substantial. If with 24+ hours at LHR, the need to recover bags at LHR jumps way higher.

It all comes down to whether or not the bag tags print out in DEN with ATH on it or not. If ATH shows up on the bag and claim tags, then I would skip trying to claim the bag at LHR as the bag handlers ordinarily would not send it to the (post-passport control) arrivals baggage claim area at LHR -- they would route it airside to ATH.
