I didn't initially get this card to cancel immediately after earning the 100K bonus miles, but the situation seems to be presenting itself.

I had a big purchase coming up so I charged the $10,000 in the first few days upon receiving the card. My statement date isn't for another three weeks.

If I wanted to get out of the annual fee, should I just keep watching my AAdvantage account for the 100K miles, then cancel the card? Should I send them a payment for the balance first?

Would it be safe to apply for the Citi HHonors card in the meantime (I haven't applied for any other Citi cards in many years) and try to transfer some of the credit away from this card before I close it?

I don't have interest in "churning" this card again.

Thanks!

Brian
I forgot a few things you have at least 30 and most likely 37 (according to all the posts) days from when the AF is posted to your account to close the card and get a refund of the full $450. So just wait for those miles to transfer after your statement closes, and once they are actually IN your AA account, you are good to go with closing it. It's best to pay off the 10K before the statement closes, otherwise your credit utilization will be too high and it might adversely affect your credit score. They say its best to have a small balance on your statement-- and since you should be getting a $450 refund, you might want to pay $9000 and the rest after the statement closes.
