At GYE they have a systems of 'pre-boarding checks' at the gate, around 30m before boarding. While I was waiting to pay for my duty-free, my name was called out (among others) to go to the gate for this procedure.
So I did. The lovely Senorita there said, "Oh, Hello, Sir Henry ... we have a new seat for you! Unfortunately, it's not a window seat ... 05F!"
So, for my last 6 long-hauls with KLM, I have had 3 free upgrades! Despite the mostly 'negative' comments on this forum about the degradation of the FB program, I'm actually starting to feel like 'the most valued customer' that an FB platinum is claimed to be! ^^

OT: When you're on a roll... in Quito, I booked a 'basic' room at the Grand Mercure Alameda; on arrival, the front-desk Senorita informed me that she'd upgraded me to a "Privilege Suite" ... dunno if this was because I'm Gold with A|Club; if it is, then it's the first significant benefit I've ever had from them.
Very nice on such long flights!
