So the misunderstanding centers around this:

"Customer must also present a boarding pass for travel on a Star Alliance flight departing from the local airport"

and in particular what is a Star Alliance flight.

The united rep and their manager said any UA ticketed flight qualifies as a star alliance flight.

As I understand it, most of you are saying it needs to be *A metal.

So whose right?
